Neutral Bay is part of the Lower North Shore located on the sapphire waters of Sydney Harbour. In Colonial Times it was a place ships could anchor to take on supplies and kept potential enemy ships away from the main settlement. Military Road, one of Sydney’s busiest traffic routes, was used in 1871-2 to haul cannons and supplies to the fortifications erected on Bradley’s head.
Servicing the growing community was The Oaks Hotel established in 1880 named after Patrick Hays’ Oak Steam Brickworks which was located on the adjoining site. The Oaks Steam Brick Company operated from 1880-1891, the site was bought and transformed by the Government into Neutral Bay Tram depot in 1909. May Gibbs renowned Australian children’s author and illustrator moved to Neutral Bay in 1924 and lived in her “Nutcote” residence for 44 years.
Having such a long established history many homes were built using galvanised steel pipes for the homes plumbing and drainage. Although galvanised steel is durable, as water pipes it has a limited lifespan of 40-50 years. The pipes can rust internally when the zinc coating breaks down which may cause reduced water pressure or blocked lines. These pipes can be renewed in PVC giving you clean flowing water again.

Clara and Samuel entered the local garden show every year. They prided themselves on the magnificent gardens and surrounds. They both loved their garden and they had worked hard to make it a special show piece.
The crowning glory was their landscaped swimming pool. After a lottery win they decided to indulge in a salt water pool they could have otherwise never afforded. The pool was one of their better investments as their children brought the grandchildren over regularly to use the pool. It meant they could see their beloved grandkids often.
Over the past year, Samuel had decided to cut down some of the foliage around the pool to save him from having to tend so many garden areas. What he then did was ship in some sand and create a small artificial beach complete with a palm tree. The kids even had room enough to build small sand castles.
It had been a very hot summer and the pool was being used often. There were lots of pool parties and family get-togethers. The kids were enjoying the sand castle building and they loved the fact that everyone was together having a great time. The poolside shower was also a handy addition so people could wash off the salt water before they started to dry off.
There was one thing that Samuel had not factored in and that was the sand. After some time, sand began to build up in the shower drain causing it to eventually block altogether. Samuel tried to clear the drain with his hose and his high pressure cleaner but nothing was clearing that sand.
Fearing the water would eventually flow into the pool, Samuel contacted his neighbourhood plumber in Neutral Bay who had a water jetter. He was able to clear the blockage of sand and advised Samuel that he would be better to remove the sand or schedule regular maintenance.
